Delta Zenith Bank Principal Cup Kick Off Wednesday
The 2nd edition of Zenith Bank and Delta state government organized principal’s cup competition will kick off next week Wednesday in Asaba, with 1200 private and 400 government secondary schools participating.
The four months football tournament will be midwifed by 30 coaches, all to discover grass root talents and nurture them for future.
The commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Chiedu Ebie, said in Asaba, while briefing journalists on the preparedness that the “game is starting early and essentially, it is grass root football, so we are starting in all the 25 local government areas and we hope that new talents would be discovered.”
He said the state would focus on having coaches that would be able to identify the talents, “and we intend to focus on that and we will be able to promote sports side by side with education,” stating that the state has produced some of the best and finest footballers in the country.
Zenith Bank Plc Zonal Manager, South-south, Lucky Ighade, who took time to explain the benefits derivable from the competition, said the whole idea was to restore sports culture which has gone into oblivion back to schools.
He said the 2nd edition would witness a more resounding feat as the 1st was without doubt a huge success.
Also speaking, the Director-General (DG), Delta State Sports Commission said the commission has a mandate to produce grassroot sports persons, adding: “sports and education are twins that walk together for the healthy development of the child.”
He said for this reason, government is going to provide the enabling environment for sports to thrive, but urged private organizations to emulate Zenith Bank to invest in sports and youths development.
According to the state Sports Director, government focus was to engage the youths in sports activities, saying: “a number of the youth restiveness in the Niger Delta is a result of idle minds. So, everybody should be involved.”
Earlier in his remarks, Mr. Tony Oritse Pemu, CEO Hideaplus Ltd, hinted that several innovations that were not in the last games have been brought into the 2nd edition such as “branded jerseys and football kits” to upscale the games and benchmark international practices.
While assuring that this edition will be far better than last year in all ramifications, he disclosed that there are moves to also tighten the procedure on verification of players.
