After a careful analysis of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration for two and half years, former speaker of the Delta state house of assembly, Victor Ochei, said Okowa’s 30 months as governor of Delta state are wasted years of Delta’s scarce resources.
In an exclusive interview with a team of journalists including Emeraldng.com, Ochei said: “As I move round the state, am yet to pass my comment but the performance of Okowa’s administration is abysmal. I have seen all states that are not half as rich as Delta, they have major peojects to show their people. I have not seen any star project that one can lay hold on in Delta state.
“It is almost three years down the administration, it is all abysmal performance, it is the worse administration so far in terms of development Deltans have ever seen and I make bold to say it.”
On the 2019 governorship election, Ochei, a stalwart of the All progressives Congress (APC), said though there are calls from different quarters for him to contest the governorship, he is still studying the calls “and if after studying them, I find it expedient I will answer.”
He attributed the calls to his performance when he was speaker of the state house of assembly. While in the house as speaker, he made great impact which no speaker before and after him had made in the state house of assembly.
He said: “Well, I am still hearing the calls like you are hearing them and if it is all based on my legacies that I left in the house of assembly in terms of infrastructure, it is only fulfilling the Anglican hymn that talks about only be remembered by what we have done.
“Well, I have not passed from the earth and its toiling, I am still here and people are remembering me for what I have done, it is a sign that I did very well and I will very much want to leave that as an example for those who are there.
“In every position you find yourself, make the very best of it, work hard at it and put in your best. At the time you are doing it many people may not like you but by the time you leave and if you genuinely mean what you are doing with the intention to make it for public good, the public will appreciate you at the appropriate time and I guess I am getting that.”
He dismissed the claim by some PDP members that APC is not on ground in Delta, saying as far as he is on ground with other big names, the party is powerfully on ground, noting that at the appropriate time the elections will speak for which party is on ground and which is not on ground in the state.
He said the people of Delta have come out of that old business of thinking it is one party state, adding that APC is on ground and is very optimistic that the APC will wreslte power from the PDP stronghold.
Though the PDP government seemed to have concluded that Okowa would remain in government till 2023, Ochei said the party is free to say anything it wants but that the people of Delta and not the party will decide who becomes the governor of Delta in 2019.
“Deltans will decide who their governor will be in 2019, it has nothing to do whether it is one party or another party. It is about the person who Deltans believe would be able to do the job for them. They are not going to be deceived again.
“They have been deceived too many times, they will not be deceived again I can promise you that. Go and put it down, Deltans will not be deceived in 2019, they will do the right thing and they will guide their votes.”
