At UNGA New York: Activist Anighoro stages one-man-protest, says Buhari hindrance to development of strong institutions

Niger Delta Self Determination and Civil Rights Activist, Rex Ekiugbo Anighoro, who presently is attending the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, has embarked on a ‘One Man’ Advocacy Walk at the entrance of the Nigerian House and the United Nations as well as the popular Times Square.

Anighoro who is a Goal Sixteen advocate of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aimed at achieving global peace, justice and strong Institutions, has re-echoed the Barrack Obama maxim that ‘Nigeria and Indeed Africa do not need strongmen but strong institutions.

The activist stated that President Muhammadu Buhari was a pretending democrat and strongman president who is hindering the development of strong institutions in Nigeria.

He stated that strong men presidents and leaders have been a curse to the African continent as they have strangulated every institution of good governance and citizens welfare for despotic and nepotistic ends.

The Delta state born activist stated that President Buhari and his gang of strongmen presidents across Africa are reportedly opposed to the development of strong institutions, as Indeed the development of strong institutions will erode them of their domination and stronghold over the citizens whom they mostly see as a conquered people.

Anighoro, in a statement sent to hundreds of global civil society organizations currently at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has called for urgent global intervention on the strongmen syndrome in Africa expecially in Nigeria as it is a ticking time bomb.

He stated that the Nigerian judicial institution that ought to be strong, independent and fearless is one of the institutions that is clearly under the seige of President Muhammadu Buhari in Nigeria.

Going further, he made it known that judicial officers in Nigeria now find it very difficult to give rulings and judgements against the interest of President Buhari.

He stated that it is a sad commentary that senior judicial officers are now forced to deliver statute barred rulings and judgements even in election petitions in a bid to save themselves from the constant harassments and intimidations from President Muhammadu Buhari.

Anighoro, in the statement, made it clear that the security institution in Nigeria is another institution that has been derobed of its neutrality as it now works for President Buhari more as a private security organization and not as the Nigerian government independent institution.

He opined that the Department of State Services (DSS) and even the Economic Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) are now used to witchhunt, harrass and intimidate perceived and real political opponents while they are used to shield corrupt political officers who are loyal to President Buhari from any harassment and prosecution despite corruption charges hanging over their necks.

Continuing, he stated that the legislative arm which ought to be another independent institution that guarantees separation of powers and checks on the powerful executive arm of government is now a shadow of itself as its leadership has become a rubber stamp and toothless bulldog that has surrendered their powers to the executive and always ready to bootlick in the name of collaborating for national good.

Anighoro, who is a Year 2010 Alumni of the International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) a United States Department of State sponsored Exchange Program, said Omoleye Sowore, the founder of Sahara Reporters and the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) at the February 2019 presidential elections is a victim of the strongman stronghold over state institutions.

He stated that Sowore was detained at the promptings of Buhari by the DSS and then used the gagged judiciary to give legal stamp to tyranny and dictatorship.

He decried the continuous keeping in captivity of Sowore by the security agents despite fulfilling his bail conditions after an unjust over forty five days in custody.

Anighoro made it known that hundreds of human rights activists from the globe are gathering to protest against human rights and social justice abuses by governments and strongmen president and leaders like Muhammadu Buhari at the United Nations Headquarters as activities of strongmen presidents in Africa were certainly a disaster to the pursuit of peace, justice and development of strong Institutions in Africa and the globe.

The activist averred that year after year pretending leaders expecially from Africa come to the United Nations General Assembly in New York to lie to the world about their commitment to building strong democratic institutions when indeed they rig elections and get judicial declarations that show that mere affidavits are better than certificates and that education was a waste of time.

He, however, vowed to intensify global advocacy on the Goal Sixteen (16) of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) because even the strongmen presidents and leaders in Africa and across the globe must not be left behind if the agenda 2030 must be a profound reality.

Anighoro who is the spokesman of the Niger Delta Peoples Salvation Front ( NDPSF) founded and led by Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo Asari demanded for the restructuring of the Nigerian union at the table of brotherhood as Nigeria which remains a forced union of unwilling nations is a failed state.

He called on every Niger Deltan to rise up, be vigilant and ready to reject in totality the re introduction of the Fulani herdsmen expansionist and Internal Colonization Ruga Agenda by President Buhari who is hell bent on confiscating the lands of the people of the Niger Delta for the benefit of his supremacist Fulani Herdsmen using the rubber stamped and cowed legislative arm to give legal backing to his confiscated territory quest.

He stated that Ruga in any form or guise is not needed anywhere in the Niger Delta Region and Southern Part of Nigeria.

Anighoro, who is also the converner of the Alliance for Human Rights and Social Justice (AHRSJ) called on the United Nations to take notice of the Nigerian situation even as he seeks the solidarity and attention of all people of goodwill to the reality of the Nigerian condition.

Some of the inscriptions on the placards he carried during the walk Include Nigeria (Africa) do not need strongmen but Strong Institutions, the Nigerian Nation Must be Free,’ ‘Restructure Nigeria Now! We do not need Ruga in any form in the Niger Delta’, ‘Nigeria Judicial Institution is under seige of Strongmen Buharified’, ‘United Nations Please Note in Nigeria Affidavit is better than Certificate’.
