The Bayelsa state commissioner for education, Jonathan Obuebite, has announced the decision of the state government to organise an education round table towards the sustenance of the series of achievements and successes recorded in the sector, saying the huge investment in the education sector by the present administration is working.
Obuebite, who made this known during the maiden interactive session with the management and staff of the ministry, explained that the proposed education roundtable would among other things be used to create collaborations and partnerships with relevant institutions within and outside the country, including the Harvard Business School Alumni Association of Nigeria, HBSAAN.
Obuebite charged directors and staff of the ministry to be committed to their work as well as ensure that the government’s huge investment in the education sector yielded positive dividends both on the short and long term basis.
He noted that the government has invested massively in the sector and as a result, all the stakeholders, including the staff of the ministry have their roles to play in ensuring that, the restoration government achieves its lofty ambition of repositioning the sector for the overall benefit of Bayelsans.
He, therefore called on the workers to be more dedicated in carrying out their duties, warning that he would not condone any act of indiscipline, stressing that, part of his agenda is to build on the foundation already laid by his predecessors.
According to him, the gains already made can only be sustained and even be improved upon, with the support and commitment of a group of dedicated staff, who should be ready to go the extra mile in the performance of their duties.
Hon. Obuebite pointed out that, his vision is to ensure the operation of an efficient and effective educational system, devoid of unnecessary distractions and disruptions in the form of strike actions that would affect the smooth implementation of the government’s policies and programmes in the sector.
While, expressing his preparedness to work with the management and staff of the ministry, even after the stipulated working hours, he called for the understanding of persons who may be affected, as it is all intended to fast-track the execution some the policies, which are so dear the Restoration administration.
The education commissioner used the occasion inform the staff of plans to introduce some reforms, which include the creation of a website for the ministry, social media handles, a group chat platform for principals and head teachers in both the primary and secondary schools across the State.
Others are, the repair of the school buses provided by the government to convey public school students to and from school, to dedicate one of the buses to the staff of the ministry to ease their transportation difficulties.
According to Hon. Obuebite, some staff would be mandated to address some anomalies, such as the issue of students on uniforms loitering during school hours, stressing that, those that would be assigned for the job should arrest such students and bring them to the ministry for further instructions, alongside their parents and the principal or headmaster of the schools they attend.
He also announced the Governor’s allocation of a new and befitting building for the education ministry, which would be referred to as “The Education House”.
Responding, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Mr Felix Odubo thanked the commissioner for the meeting, submitting that it was apt and worth it. He said that before now, they have always wished to be part of the commissioner’s energetic lifestyle especially when it has to do with service delivery and today their wish has become a reality, which was why the governor on the day he was sworn in, commended him specially and charged him to extend the zeal to the education sector as a pointer to the staff of the ministry.
The permanent secretary, on behalf of the staff and management of the ministry, assured the commissioner of their unflinching support and desire to work with him to achieve the set goals.
He stated that with the zeal and commitment demonstrated by the commissioner, they will work with him to realize the dreams and target of the present state administration, which is to make Bayelsa State the best in education.
