Buhari declares June 12 democracy day, abolishes May 29 with effect from June 2019

President Muhammadu  Buhari has declared June 12 from henceforth as democracy day. He said from 2019, democracy day will now be celebrated on June 12. By that statement, he has abolished May Day for Nigerians.

In a statement he personally signed, he said June 12 is far more symbolic than May 29 that has been celebrated for the past 18 years.

He said June 12 was the day millions of Nigerians expressed their will in election that was adjudged as the freest and fairest in the history of Nigeria.

He said the decision was arrived at after due consultation, noting that late MKO Abiola who won the June 12, 1993 presidential election will be honoured posthumously on June 12, 2018.
