The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development, (Centre LSD) on Friday held an environmental education for students and community members for select secondary schools at Orogun Grammar School in Ughelli North local government area of Delta state.
The sensitization was held in collaboration with National Coalition on Gas Flaring and Oil Spills in the Niger Delta (NACGOND) and support from the Dutch embassy in Nigeria
A statement issued and signed by Mr. Foster Akpore, Niger Delta Coordinator of Centre LSD, stated that the objective of setting the environmental club is to take the campaign on environmental awareness to the people of the Niger Delta.
It is also to ensure environmental justice to the degraded Niger Delta environment, implant skills for environmental leadership, pursue sustainable utilization of environmental resources as well as campaign for actions that will promote sustainable development in the Niger Delta.
The training program which was very robust and engaging, drew participants from various stakeholders including students, community groups, CBOs and the media.
Participants turned out en-masse and were upbeat about taking the issues of the environment seriously including demonstrating environmental leadership in the larger society.
Schools where the sudents environmental club was established included Orogun Grammar School, Imodje Secondary School, Ekruopia Secondary School, Aragba Secondary School, Omo Secondary School, Emonu Secondary School, Oroerha Secondary School, Edoja Secondary School
A community group called Orogun Comrade Community headed by Comrade Reuben Imonisa, mobilized 30 of their members to act as Orogun environmental vanguard as a result of the training.
