Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta state, Chief Sunny Onuesoke, has called on Deltans from Delta south and Central to keep cool over the clamour for which senatorial district takes over from Governor Ifeanyi Okowa at the end of his administration on May 29, 2023.
His call is coming on the heels of the declaration by president of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Barrister Peretubo Oweilaemi and some youths in Urhobo land who are already at daggers drawn over the senatorial district to take over from Okowa in 2023.
The Ijaws are of the view that having completed the zoning arrangement for the three senatorial districts of the state, the Ijaws should take over from the governor in 2023 while the Urhobos are of the reasoning that the zoning system should continue from where it started, being Delta central, in 1999.
But Chief Onuesoke, a respected leader in Urhobo land, has said it is too premature to begin the battle for the senatorial contest, arguing that if such continues, it will distract the sitting Governor Ifeanyi Okowa from carrying out his good works for the well being of Delta people.
He has, therefore, called for calm, noting that at the appropriate time, events will unfold and the senatorial district that will produce the governor will emerge.
He said: “It is too premature at this time. I don’t want people to trump up this issue so that they don’t distract the governor from his job. It should be put aside for now for the governor to do his job. Like I keep telling people, I never campaigned and voted for Okowa merely because the governorship was zoned to Delta north.
“Count me out of that. The governor is aware that I, Onuesoke, said that I did not work and vote for him because he is from Delta north.
“I want to warn politicians from Delta central and south to be out of such. Trumping up such issues now is diversionary, it will distract the governor from doing his work.
“I work for Okowa because of the qualities in him. I know what he can do. If Okowa performs more than he is doing now and there is an opportunity for Okowa to come again, I will be among the first set of people to clamour for that.
“My vote for him was purely on merit and his performance index. I am against zoning, I’m against the issue of federal character because it breeds mediocrity. It is stupid.
“Why vote for a man that you know cannot perform? I don’t support federal character. You don’t bring a footballer into the national team because he’s from the North West zone and you know he does not know how to play the football.
“If Warri men are capable of delivering the goal, there is nothing wrong, the goal is for all of us. So, the idea of bringing up Urhobo, Ijaw, Isoko is all rubbish. It’s all retrogressive ideology.
Onuesoke, who said he has been with Okowa in the last 12 years and that Okowa gave him his first appointment in 2007, explained that in the next four years, Okowa will shock Deltans in the way he will perform and change the landscape of the state.
Onuesoke said: “I’m quite convinced. This time around I know Okowa will diversify the economy because the infrastructures are already there for him. What remains now is for him to create an environment for foreign investors to come in. He is one governor who doesn’t talk and shout. That is the way he operates.
“What you guys saw in 2015 till date is a tip of the iceberg of what will happen in the next four years. That, I know very confidently. You will be shocked with things you have never seen before.
“Many people are getting it wrong thinking he will not perform again before he is not contesting for governorship again. Let me prove it to you. Look, he is very close to Ibori and Ibori never did that. Uduaghan never did that.
“If somebody performed and you voted him for second tenure, why did you vote for him? You voted him because he performed. You voted him to do more. Okowa is not ending his political career now. Let that be known to everybody.
For someone to say because there is no room for third term, he will not perform again, that is not correct. He is still very young, He has aspirations, there are national level assignments. Is it a crime if Okowa becomes the vice president of this country?
“He will use his performance as springboard to the national level. Okowa is not limited to the next four years. He is going to triple what he has just done for the state.
“I’m not saying this because I’m on his payroll, No. I know what he can do. You will be shocked at the end of the day. It will look like magic in your eyes. At the stage of Okowa now, he should be looking for a legacy, a name that people will tap from.”
