A faction of the Delta State Chapter of All Progressives Congress has been alleged to have concluded plans to scuttle the APC National Working Committee approved Delta congress slated for today (Monday) at the College of Education (Technical), Asaba, the state capital.
A dependable source told our correspondent that part of the plot is to cause confusion using thugs believed to be loyal to the faction which held its parallel congress on Saturday and have been kept in the state capital to unleash terror immediately the congress is to commence.
It was further gathered that the thugs have been provided security cover and would be deployed to the venue in a move similar to the stealing of the Mace of the Senate some weeks ago.
Recall that Ogboru/Omo-Agege group had on Saturday conducted a parallel congress despite the postponement of the exercise by NWC owing to allegation of inducement.
Rather than hold the congress at the approved venue (College of Education), the parallel congress was held and conducted by the removed Senator Gbenga Obadara-led Delta State Congress Committee at St. Mulumba College in Okpanam near Asaba under tight security.
It was further gathered that the Delta state commissioner of police, Mr. Muhammad Mustafa, was avoiding the leaders from the Emerhor camp, refusing to take their calls or take any proactive steps to address the threat, even when the APC NWC had written to him on the rescheduled state congress.
A security source who pleaded anonymity confirmed the development to newsmen late Sunday night in Asaba.
A top member of the faction further disclosed that some youth leaders in the Emerhor camp have been penciled down to be arrested on frivolous charges. Among those alleged to have been penciled down for arrest are Senior Aide to NDDC Executive Director of Projects, Jaro Egbo.
“Today (Monday’s) congress could be bloody based on plot by the other faction to disrupt the exercise. The thugs will be working with security men particularly the police to cause tension and unrest. The intention is to ensure that no other congress holds in Delta state.
“As we speak, some youth leaders of the party are also being targeted for arrest. Some of us have been assigned our duties. From indications, the directive is from above”, the senior police officer disclosed to our correspondent late Sunday night.
It was gathered that the Emerhor faction which has a former speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Engr. (Barr.) Victor Ochei, Prof Pat Utomi, Chief Hyacinth Enuha and other prominent leaders of the party on its fold, are already aware of the development.
Despite the move, a leader of the Emerhor faction who does not want to be disclosed, said they are going ahead with congress, saying it was the only recognized congress in the state.
The congress is to be conducted by Eugene Odoh-led committee which has John Clark-Dabwan as secretary.
According to Bigpen online, Omo-Agege had said that there was no counter directive that the Senator Olugbenga Obadara led committee was replaced by someone else, insisting that any other congress outside the one held on Saturday was a parallel congress and would not stand.
When contacted, the state police public relations officer, Andrew Aniamaka, for confirmation and clarification, denied the allegations against the police commissioner, describing the commissioner as an angel whom even the devil cannot accuse of any wrong doing.
He said: “Who can complain against the angel? No, not even the devil could have a heart to complain against the police commissioner.
“Politicians should leave the commissioner out of their wahala. We have an upright and excellent man, you even journalists see with your own eyes and hear with your ears, they should not bring their problem to the police commissioner.
“He is far above board. He is not that kind of person, he is a perfect gentleman. He is a man serious with his God and fellow man. He is a man who wants the best for society and people around him. He is a man who is not moved by sight. So they should not make that mistake because it will backfire on them.
“No truth in all they have said. The commissioner is always there for the people. As we speak, he is already in his office working. He is working for the lives and security of the people. He does not joke with people’s lives and security matters. He is a man of integrity and cannot be party to such conduct.”
