A member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Hon. Alfred Belemote Watson, and the former secretary to the state government during the administration of Chief Timipre Sylva, Chief Gideon Ekeowe, has dumped the All Grand Party Alliance (APGA) and the All Progressive Congress (APC) for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the State.
While Hon. Alfred Belemote Watson, a member representing Brass Constituency 2 is defecting to the PDP as the only elected official of the party in the state and due to alleged pressure and cases of exclusion from the largesse of the House.
Chief Gideon Ekeowe, who served as Secretary to the state government during Chief Timipre Sylva as Governor and served as state agent of the APC during the 2016 governorship election, is defecting due to alleged irreconcilable differences with his former boss over the affairs of the party in the state.
Sources told journalists that though the defection has been perfected, the official defection would be done when the governor, Hon.Seriake Dickson returns from his visit outside the state.
It was gathered that the defection by the APGA legislator was a strategic means with which to secure a second term ticket to return to the state assembly and ward off rising opposition in some aspirants that has indicated interests to replace him.
Among top contenders for the Brass Constituency 2 seat are the Special Advisers to the State Governor, Austin Adigio, Timi Amupo Agala, Esau Andrew from Odioma community and one Amachree.
It was also gathered that Hon. Belemote Watson efforts to defect to the APC was frustrated by some stakeholders of the Party who allegedly misinformed the leader of the Party, Chief Timipre Sylva.
Aide to the defecting lawmaker, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the defection plan, insisting that the decision to dump APC was after due consultation with the Brass Constituency.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the New Face Political group in Brass Local Government Area of the State, Mr. Desmond Robert has declared interest to contest for the constituency 1 seat of the State House of Assembly.
According to Desmond Robert, the decision to join the race was as a result of the numerous calls on him to contest by majority of the people in the constituency.
Desmond hinted that he wishes to continue the good works of the member representing Brass Constituency 1 in the state legislature, Hon. Israel Sunny-Goli, whom he described as a kind and effective leader who has perfectly demonstrated true representation.
He promised to prioritize security, education, capacity building and stomach infrastructure if elected into the state assembly.
According to him, “If given the mandate to serve my people, I will partner with the Ministry of Health and other relevant organisations to organise free medical outreaches for my people.”
Desmond, who is popularly called D New Face of Brass, equally promised to periodically organise sensitization programmes in order to enlighten youth from the constituency on the dangers of drug abuse.
“I will only sponsor and support bills that will better the life of my people. I will equally dish out soft loans to our industrious women as well as give subventions to students in higher institutions,” he assured.
