A pro-democracy group, PDP for Democracy and Good Governance (PDP-DGG) has slammed the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Mr. Konbowei Friday Benson, over his comment on open option for Governor Seriake Dickson to leave the party amidst alleged crisis between him and the Former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
The group stated that though the position of the State Assembly on vote of confidence on the Governor, Seriake Dickson, the claim that no member of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), including Governor Seriake Dickson, is tied to the party is callous and a possible indication of a plan B to work against the party in the state.
The Speaker, Hon. Kombowei Benson, had on Tuesday shortly after the state lawmakers passed a vote of confidence on Governor Dickson, for his performance since 2012, said the PDP was not indispensable.
According to the Speaker, “there is nothing like impeachment here. No one can distabilise the state. Bayelsa as a state was 100 per cent PDP all these while. Before now, all members here were PDP, even those in opposition now. Our members were the ones that made APC strong.
“Our party should be wise. I am not speaking for the Governor. But I know that anyone not happy with PDP is free to go elsewhere now that we have over forty political parties. Nothing special anywhere even in the face of possible independent candidacy.”
But the Pro-Democracy group, PDP for Democracy and Good Governance (PDP-DGG) in a statement issued via email and signed by the National Coordinator, Comrade James Ebikibina, said though the claims of the Bayelsa Speaker showed the political rights of association, “the statement showed that the party and those that have benefited from it are working at cross divide.
“It also shows that while National Chairman of the Party was hosting the State working Committee in Abuja, the Bayelsa Speaker was speaking from another side of the mouth. It only confirms the boast by the State governor that his political group, “Restoration “,not PDP, has the needed capacity and structure to win elections in Bayelsa.
“They should remember that the PDP as a party, gave them the strong platform on which they won elections at the State, National Assembly and Governorship. And they should be prepared to tell the people why they referred to PDP as the only Ijaw Party.”
“For us, in the PDP, we have gotten the messages of Governor Dickson and the Restoration group. Like the Bayelsa Speaker said, they are not tied to the Party .And they should stop deceiving the People of the State.
