Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state has said that over 500 persons with cataract have had their sight restored through the O’5 initiative of the wife of the governor, Dame Edith Okowa.
Okowa, who stated this at the ‘praise and worship thanksgiving event to mark the 2018 Democracy Day, commended Restore Sight Africa and all those partnering with his wife in making the programme a huge success.
He said the programme, haven recorded 500 surgeries beside free eye glasses in just eight local government areas visited, no doubt, would record over a thousand by the time it had gone through the 25 LGAs in the state.
The governor noted that his administration was building on the solid foundation laid by past administration of Chief James Onanefe Ibori, and Dr. Emmanuel Ewetan Uduaghan, as he believed that governance was a continual process, adding that Sapele market which was started by Chief James Ibori would be commissioned on June 5, 2018 and also the dualization of Jesse road.
While saying that many more of such projects would be completed by his administration as resources are made available, he said that many storm drainages and road projects were ongoing in the state, saying that more schools and other projects that will impact on the lives of the people positively would be built.
He urged Deltans to cooperate with the government and traditional institutions to bring about the needed peaceful environment that would attract investors into the state, adding that though investors were already investing in the state, more were needed. “Delta is peaceful because God has pronounced it to be so”, he remarked.
The governor commended the commissioner for basic education for his energy and intellect as demonstrated in the just concluded principal’s cup, and the about to begin headmaster’s cup, adding that his administration is blessed with crop of intellectual commissioners who are doing greatly well in their various capacities.
The governor, while saying that the state would be hosting 54 African countries to Senior African Athletics Competition, he disclosed that the Stephen Keshi stadium has been turned into a world class stadium adding that the Asaba airport has also opened for business activities, adding that the airport upon completion in June, would have its run-way as the best in the country.
Okowa stated that the state secretariat which has been under construction when completed would accommodate all state ministries, department and agencies in one place to create better efficiency in governance, adding that the project would be due for completion in June, 2019.
The governor assured that as soon as the Asaba storm drainage was completed, that of Warri axis would take off as they would all be handled gradually. He revealed that the biggest of the Asaba storm drainage was that from Golf course to DBs road which would be due for completion in February 2019 while the smaller of the storm project from Jesus Saves to Direct labour Agency (DLA) would be due for completion in February also.
