Matrix oil makes statement against illegal bunkering, explains implications on lives and immediate communities

Authorities of Matrix oil and gas, an indigenous oil firm situated in Ifiekporo Warri south local government area of Delta state have said that illegal bunkering activities pose serious threat to the lives of people and communities within the scope of the illegal oil explorers.

Group head of Matrix Energy, Frederick Olomuro, in the expansive complex of the oil firm, told journalists that the activities of oil bunkers should not be taken for granted, even as he called on government and other stakeholders to come in and stop the menace.

Olomuro told journalists under the auspices of indigenous correspondents’ chapel that oil bunkering endangers the life of innocent Nigerians, who may be scooping oil but unaware of the risk they are being exposed to in the process of scooping the highly inflammable product.

He said: “We see people scoop diesel and oil. We on our own, there is little or nothing we can do about it. It is dangerous to life, when people go for scoop, if care is not taken there will be a spark and you can tell the far reaching consequences.”

He said oil bunkering endangers the environment, noting: “When the product goes into the environment, it affects the aquatic life, the source of drinking water for the community is also affected. It affects underground water. Their fish is also affected.

“So, it’s a serious threat. At our end, we don’t want to assume where the people come from but they must have been coming from any of these close communities. Don’t forget we are tenants, all we can do is to call for the authorities to see how much they can do.

“That is the best we can do, we cannot confront them. It’s to call authorities to see what is happening and help out.”

He cautioned against illegal activities considering its adverse socio-economic effect on the economy and human lives, admonishing media practitioners to embark on advocacy campaigns against illegal bunkering.

On the issue of corporate social responsibility, Olomuro said the firm has helped schools in the community and has built a good relationship with the community leaders, hence it has no issue with the community in whatever guise, noting that the secret of the oil firm’s success is hinged on its leadership qualities.

He said the firm is just out to serve the needs of society, saying whether there is fuel scarcity or not, its duty is to serve the need of Nigerians as it is bent on maintaining its status quo. “We keep doing as much as we can as this is in line with our company’s policy,” Olomuro said.

Earlier in his address, leader of the visiting journalists, Barth Ozah, commended the oil firm over its consistent stability in the price of premium motor spirit in spite of the challenges in the industry.

Hence, he said: “On behalf of the executives and members of the union, I wish not only to applaud you for your support for the masses in the state but to place on record the tremendous goodwill, attention and generosity you have continuously extended to your customers, regardless of the obvious challenges and harsh economic realities.”
