National publicity secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Kola Ologbondiyan, has said that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is the originator of fake news in Nigeria.
His submission may not be far from the truth as prior to 2015 when the APC took over the reins of power at the national level, there was no issue of fake news as being seen in Nigeria.
The PDP publicity secretary spoke when the national executives of Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (OMPAN) led by its president, Comrade James Emeh Anyalekwa, visited him in Abuja at the weekend.
He said while the APC is thriving on fake news and deceiving Nigerians, the PDP will not engage in such acts, rather he said the PDP will run issue base campaigns, bordering on electricity, the economy, security and others.
He said: “Since the All Progressives Congress, APC, took over the leadership of Nigeria, we notice that both at the centre and majority of the state they control, lives have been traumatizing for Nigerians and the good people of Nigeria earnestly desire a new government that will be people oriented.
“PDP has the capacity to deliver on its promises and that’s why wherever you turn now, people are running into our great party.
“And you people have also come at the right time because we are moving towards campaign period and OMPAN will play a major and critical role ahead of 2019 general election by letting people know the need to vote out the All Progressives Congress, APC, both at the centre and all the states they control.
“And in the next few days, your organization will be updated with all manners of questionable materials that will contain how APC has been deceiving Nigerians.”
He described Buhari as a failure and said Nigerians will hold President Muhammadu Buhari accountable for deceiving them in the name of fighting corruption and promised that PDP will partner with OMPAN in educating the masses on the need to vote Buhari out in 2019.
Reacting to Oshiomhole’s claim that Ndigbo is divided over Atiku /Obi, Kola denied the claim and said the Igbos are behind the People’s Democratic Party presidential candidate and told the APC national chairman to face his corruption charges against the Department of State Security Service, DSS, instead of talking from both sides of his mouth.
He commended OMPAN for standing for the truth and sticking to high standard of practice in their chosen profession and said that PDP stands for freedom, democracy, development, transparency and good governance.
Earlier, Comrade Emeh James Anyalekwa said the association’s leadership was in Abuja for its NEC meeting between 15th and 18th November 2018 and thought it proper to visit the party to discuss on issues of mutual benefits.
He further said that the visit was imperative because of the need to spread accurate information especially now that fake news is spreading like wild fire online.
In his words: “The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has done a lot of great things in transformation of Nigeria and we the Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria, OMPAN, thought it will be nice to visit the publicity secretary of this great party so that we can discuss ways we can contribute to advancing the ideals of this great party.
“There is also need for accurate dissemination of information and we as a channel of mass communication can also help in passing your objectives and goals to the people.
“We are here so that we can rub minds together and know how we, as a body, can contribute especially now that election is around the corner.”
