In furtherance of his promise of a free and fair party primaries, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state has also assured People’s Democratic Party PDP faithful that he would not be involved in asking any aspirant to step-down for another in the spirit of fairness.
Governor Okowa was speaking recently at a reception organised in honour of former Governor James Ibori, by his Deputy, Chief Benjamin Elue in Obior, Aniocha north local government area.
Governor Okowa said the PDP would open its doors to people with political intentions especially the not too young to lead group as the 2019 general elections draws near, adding that the task of asking any aspirant to step-down for another would be left in the hands of party leaders.
He said that as politicians there was much to be done to put the party together to become more formidable in future elections, pointing out that the return of Chief James Ibori should be a boost to the determination of party faithful to secure more victories.
The Governor said Chief Ibori has been recognised as the leader of the South-South zone of the PDP, in acknowledgement to his contributions to modern day democracy which successive administrations had built on.
Governor Okowa said the PDP had continued to build on the political ideology and philosophy of Chief Ibori, saying that the former Governor would continue to remain relevant in the political arena not only in the state but across the country.
In his remark, former Deputy Governor, Chief Benjamin Elue said the decision to host the erstwhile Governor was informed by his achievements as a founding father of the PDP and his impact on the lives and careers of politicians in the country.
He said party leaders should continue to educate the young crops of politicians on the need to remain faithful and loyal to the party as a way of preventing them from heating up the polity and moving the PDP to greater heights.
Responding, Chief James Ibori reassured every ethnic nationalities would be treated with justice fairness and equity in the governance of the state, adding that Senator Okowa was the best choice as Governor of the state.
While recalling how he alongside other party leaders fought for the growth and development of the state and the PDP, Chief Ibori enjoined politicians to always put the interest of the people first above their personal interest
