Osibanjo’s outburst in Gbaramatu vindicated my position on Ijaw leaders – IYC president

President of the Ijaw Youth Council, Barrister Pereotubo Oweilaemi, has said that the comment of Vice President Yemi Osibanjo during his visit to commission projects in Gbaramatu kingdom had vindicated his position on the failure of Ijaw leaders in the affairs of the Niger Delta.

During the project commissioning, Vice President Osibanjo has said the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) had not met the need of the people of the region, insisting that the commission had failed the people.

The IYC president in his earlier submission had said the Ijaw leaders manning NDDC, NIMASA, Presidential Amnesty Programme and the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs have used the offices to feed their pockets and cronies at the detriment of the Niger Delta people for which the agencies are establish to cater for.

He said these agencies headed by Ijaw people, rather than improve the lives of the people, it has impoverished the people without meaningful contribution to their lives.

He said: “I want to lend my voice to our leaders, especially politicians to come together and ensure that the Ijaw nation is better than states which do not get the budgetary allocation like us in the country.

“Over the years, there has been constant banters on the issue of Nigeria Delta that led to the death of celebrated heroes like Isaac Adaka Boro and others who stood and fought for the resource of our nation.

“This led to an improved budgetary allocation in the region and yet politicians take monies meant for the development of the region for their selfish gains.

“This further ensures that minor issues such as roads, power, healthcare and general welfare of the people are not attended to as some areas still lack accessible road network in the region.
“Our Ijaw leaders who are opportune to lead should be a little impartial in the discharge of their duties and make sure that the region gets the required attention for the development of our dear Ijaw land so that we do not become products for a laughing spree.”
