PDP, APC supporters fight as politicians cross carpet in this oil rich Niger Delta state

The leadership of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Twon Brass, the Brass local government council headquarters in Bayelsa state on Tuesday traded words over the alleged violent confrontation between their supporters over alleged defection controversy.

While the PDP leadership, on a face book post of the Brass local government chairman, Victor Isaiah, claimed that some thugs loyal to the APC allegedly attacked some politicians and their supporters who defected to the ruling party last month led by a former local council chairman, Chief Ngo Sylva.

The APC, through the chairman of the Brass local government chapter, Chief Ayerite Nimiworio Kwesi, dismissed the claim as fallacious and a childish outburst meant to instigate hatred and confusion in the local government council.

The Brass caretaker chairman, Hon. Victor Isaiah, in the post, alleged that there was confusion at the weekend in the council headquarters of Twon-Brass following the alleged attack launched by suspected APC thugs and machineries against PDP loyalists who recently dumped the APC for the PDP.

According to him: “Evident reports indicate several attacks on some PDP loyalists who were earlier threatened that their decision to leave the APC will warrant bitter consequences. As at the time of this report, several PDP loyalists with various degrees of injuries are receiving medical attention at the hospital.

‘However, relevant security operatives have been alerted on the situation. The caretaker chairman, Hon. Victor Isaiah, has called for calm as the situation is gradually being contained.”

But responding in a statement, the Brass APC chairman, Chief Ayerite Nimiworio Kwesi, dismissed the claim, insisting that though the claim is politically motivated and petty kindergarten statements apparently aimed at disparaging all and always winning APC members in Brass LGA, “it was members of a pro-PDP group known as White & Mackey who had a fight which eventually led to injuries.”

Hence it is surprising to read on Facebook that it was members of the APC that allegedly attacked new intakes (actually, economic migrants erroneously called political defectors) of the PDP.

“This is not the first time the chairman’s media aides are disseminating such a distorted information, it has become their stock in trade, as they have made it their proclivity in misinforming the public with blatant lies just to score cheap political points and cover up their failing political contraptions.

“As a party, the APC finds this abruptness distasteful and unprofessional as well as against the ethos of civil politics. We therefore urge the caretaker chairman of Brass and the Brass PDP structure to call their “media untrained dogs” to order as they are unconsciously fueling undue crisis and heating up the polity unnecessarily.

“Let it be noted that Brass LGA is completely for the APC and we are not moved by the reported defection (temporary migration for economic reasons) of any of our member(s).

“We are strong and united as ever before and this would be made clearer in the forthcoming general elections.

“I want to, however, urge APC members in Twon Brass and indeed the entire Brass LGA to remain resolute and not allow themselves to be intimidated by anyone.

“Let me also use this medium to admonish the leadership of Twon Brass, security agencies operating in the area as well as the state government to call the caretaker chairman to order, as he is fond of causing unnecessary tension whenever he visits the council headquarters, Twon Brass.”
