URGENT APPEAL TO SAVE SOME NIGERIAN STUDENT DOCTORS IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC
We are seven 4th and 5th year medical students of the CHARLES UNIVERSITY, PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC.
In 2013 about 11 students from Rivers state, Nigeria, were sent to Czech Republic to study medicine on a state government funded scholarship under the auspices of the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency, RSSDA. This was after a rigorous selection process that involved tests, oral interviews, and finally an entrance exam into the university.
However, in 2016 the scholarship was withdrawn due to several reasons which left us in a very difficult place. This was after months of non-remittance of stipends which left us to fend for ourselves by taking up part time jobs, to make ends meet – a situation which we are still in right now. We tried all we could to make them see reasons why they shouldn’t leave us halfway into our studies but to no avail.
However, we were determined to see our studies to the end, so we started looking elsewhere for help. It was in the face of this that help finally came when the Czech government, through the ministry of foreign affairs and the ministry of education, offered us an extraordinary scholarship. One that included paying for our fourth, fifth, and sixth years of study with the condition that we would pay the third-year fees. It was as if heaven had smiled down on us.
As part of the agreement the school gave us until the 30th of June 2018 to clear up the debt. At that time the expectation was for the Rivers state government to clear all outstanding debts to students on the scholarship, so we hoped we would be able to clear out the payment of the third-year fees. But that was not to be as the government vehemently refused to pay up the money owed.
But still we kept looking for means to come up with this payment but to no avail. Until now we haven’t been able to come up with the payment due to financial incapability as our part-time jobs are barely enough to cover our upkeep, feeding and housing, coupled with the fact that our parents back in Nigeria are not buoyant enough, financially, seeing as most of them are either civil servants or retired.
Right now, we must come up with the tuition or be sent out of school and risk being sent out of the country. Hence this plea to anyone out there to come to our aid. We are in our 4th and 5th years of studies and our hard-work of five years despite all the negative odds is about to go down the drain. The money we owe amounts to fifteen thousand dollars (15 000) per person.
We really need your help.
