Ughelli DPO inaugurates Ekiugbo vigilante committee, warns against illegal detention


COMMITTED to bringing insecurity to its barest minimal in ‘A’ Division Ughelli, the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Kevin Zuokumor on Thursday inaugurated Ekiugbo community policing committee to complement the efforts of Nigeria Police in his division.

While inaugurating the security outfit at the community town hall, CSP Kevin charged the officers of Ekiugbo Community policing to work within the ambit of the law, adding that unlawful detention and brutality on suspects will not be tolerated while assuring them of maximum assistance from the police.

“The committee members inaugurated are to work in synergy with the Nigeria Police, they are not permitted to treat criminal cases, they should desist from all forms of illegal detention and brutality of suspects.

“The committee will complement the efforts of the police in the Division; they are empowered to arrest and hand over any suspect to the police for further interrogation”.

While assuring the assistance of the Police Force, CSP Zuokumor urged the committee to always call on the police if they have any challenges and distress for a quick response.

Speaking to newsmen, the newly inaugurated chairman, Comrade Ovwigho Onotaniyohwo who is also the President of the community said his administration deemed it necessary to form security outfit in Ekiugbo community to complement the conventional security agencies in the council area as the wave of crime and insecurity increases everyday in Ekiugbo community.

Earlier in his inaugural speech, noted that Ekiugbo community in the recent time threatened with issues of insecurity, break & entry, robbery, rape and cultism activities that has put the community in a bad light.

“Ekiugbo community like every other communities recently threatened with issues of insecurity which has make life fearful, we are bombarded with reports of break & entry, robbery, rape and cultism activities. He said.

“To arrest this trend, my administration in conjunction with the elders, Uvwie and other stakeholders in the community decided to establish Vigilante Committee to serve as Community Police Force to deal with this ugly menace”.

While debunking the rumuor make around that partisan treatments are given to suspected criminals if discovered they are from Ekiugbo Community and cruel treatment are given to strangers, he described such allegations are works of mischievous and heart die criminal to discredit his administration.

“There is no going back in our quest to bring sanity and peace to the system, we don’t care to know who you are in the community, if you are finding guilty of the law we will allow the law to take its full course on you. He vowed.
Earlier, he urged the newly inaugurated members to be dedicated and discharge their duty with diligent to ensure security of lives and properties in the community.

Amongst those inaugurated alongside the chairman are; Friday Ujeya – Vice Chairman, Andrew Ovwromor – Secretary, Richard Omohwovo –

Assistant Secretary, Comrade Pius Odjimogho –Treasurer, Hon. Sunday Udi (JP ) – Financial Secretary.
Others are; Comr. Mathew Umukoro – Head of operation, Sunday Umukoro – Ex-Official and Paul Odeh – Ex-Official and head of all groups.

Meanwhile, Hon. John Ayoro advised the committee members to always work with the police and elders of the community while carry out their duty adding that the community will not shield any member found wanting during and after duty hour.
