Delta state commissioner for finance, Chief Fidelis Okenmor Tilije, has said that the second term of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state will witness more development programmes and projects than the first term of the governor.
Emeraldng.com understands that Governor Okowa has made much impact in the state in the area of road construction, the Asaba township stadium and the storm drainage project which is aimed at controlling flood in Asaba, the Delta state capital. Most rural communities have been connected to the state capital through roads constructed by the governor in his first term.
But Tilije, who was commissioner for water resources in the first term and now finance commissioner, is optimistic that the governor will surpass his achievement in the first term with projects and programmes for the benefits of the people of Delta state.
Tilije, who advised media practitioners to verify news stories before publishing, said many people are working hard in the nation and state, noting that it does not need many people to change a system but one person could change a system for the good of all.
He said while news is expected to be corrective and change the ills in society, journalists should ensure that whatever is pushed to the public is verifiable and not from the writers imagination as such could cause crisis and unimaginable damage.
The commissioner, who said he holds online media with high esteem following the supersonic nature of its speed, said his finance ministry will ensure that every leakage in financial management will be blocked to ensure transparency and accountability.
He said: “For us in the ministry of finance, we will do the best we can. We know that whatever goes wrong in the ministry of finance touches all the fabrics of governance in the state. We will ensure that we close leakages. I did say that if you are doing anything and your conscience tells you that you shouldn’t do it, check extremely very well before you proceed.
“The conscience is an open judge to all of us. If we are doing something wrong, your conscience will tell you look you are committing. Your conscience will tell you the right thing to do. We crave your indulgence if you hear anything about us, don’t hesitate to ask us.”
He said that corruption has been a major issue in the country but the government is working round the clock to block it and close the gaps, adding that Governor Okowa has up the anthem and his lieutenants will key in to make the state better for all residents.
“Corruption is a major issue in Nigeria and we are blocking all leakages and I can tell you that we are deliberately looking for those leakages to make sure they are closed because if the leakages are not closed, before you know what is happening, it will affect the system.”
“We are working very hard and we are doing the very best that we can do. I can tell you that Governor Okowa has actually up the anthem of governance in Nigeria. We as his lieutenants will follow his steps,” Tilije noted.
